Subject: Potential Solutions to Sidewalk Expenses in Des Moines, IA
One cost that most property owners may be unaware of is that of the construction, repair, and maintenance of sidewalks for which are on their property or property margin leads to. Maintenance costs for sidewalks on or near the property can be the responsibility of the property owner depending on local or state jurisdiction.
It was identified that sidewalk construction, repair, and maintenance is very expensive and often unexpectedly impacts property owners. Property owners are often responsible for the costs associated with these actions due to local jurisdiction requirements, compared to roads which are often maintained by city or state funds. These unexpected costs can impact a property owners ability to maintain their property. If these unexpected costs are too burdensome it can force the property owner to move or foreclose on their loan. These costs also impact city decisions to expand or maintain infrastructure in lower income neighborhoods.
Property owners in Des Moines, IA are responsible for the cost of construction, repair, and maintenance of sidewalks on their property or that their property leads up to. Des Moines City Council can approve or order the construction or reconstruction of sidewalks within city limits without prior notice of the property owner. Unexpected costs can affect the property owner’s ability to keep or maintain their property.
Sidewalk costs also affect development in lower income areas if it is perceived that the neighborhoods.
